ANTHONY STREET
Anthony Street was born 1717 in Hanover, King William
County, VA. re a family tree on Ancestry.com. A
different web site, his birth date as 1710 in King William County.
His parents were William
Street and Jane
Waddy. Caroline County, Virginia Wills and Admin
Order Books 1732-1800. Nov. 1752 page 353 is the notation
that William Street died. His will was presented by Anthony
Street. It was proved and John Boynham and William
Dudley were witnesses. All early Caroline County wills were
destroyed, but there remains an index of Wills and Admin.
Anthony Street married Elizabeth
Brockman about 1734. They had at least five children
and possibly there were 7:
1. unnamed female
2. Sarah Street, born about 1736
3. Samuel William Street, born about 1738 wed Lurana
4. Thomas
Street, born about 1742 wed Lucy
5. Elizabeth Street, born about 1744 wed William
Smith Sr.
6. Caty Street, born about 1745 wed Micajah Cox
7. Frances Philadelphia Street born 1748 married Housand
Harrill
The family lived in Spotslvania County Virginia. On March 6, 1758 Antony Street on Spotsylvania County Va sold to Micajah Cox and Samuel Street, 165 acres. His son and future? Son-in-law. Virginia county Records, Spotsylvania County 1721-1800 vol 1, ed by William Armstrong Crozier.
We are given their home in 1760 through a deed description found in the Magazine of Va Genealogy, Vol 33 #1, page 64. On Aug 20, 1760 John Howerton was “adjacent to Anthony Street on the south side of the branch of Mattapony, on a level, a glade, ridges and falling ground.” Tracing the Mattapony I think it was near Thornbury, 10-12 miles south of Fredreicksburg. They may have moved away as early as 1766. That year on Nov. 29, 1766, Anthony and Elizabeth Street sold 235 acres in St. Geroges Parish, Spotslvania to Thomas Brightwell of the same county for 22 pounds 10 shillings. It was settled March 2, 1767, Spotslvania County Deed Book G from Virginia Land, marriage and probate Records 1635-1850.
Elizabeth’s father, Samuel Brockman died and his will was proved Jan 15, 1776. Anthony Street was listed to receive a bequest from the estate. This is listed in Pamunkey Neighbors, a history of early Orange County VA.
By the Revolution Anthony and Elizabeth Street lived in Amherst County VA. In April 2, 1782 he made claim for property impressed or taken for public service. This is noted in the book In The Revolution by Linora Higgenbotham Sweeny. Ancestry.com gives his plantation as beside Graham Creek and Pedler's Track Rd., 5 miles from Lynchburg. Graham Creek was damed so it is very probable that his land was near (or under) the Elon Water Treatment Reservoir just off rt.130.
Anthony Street died before June 7, 1790 in Amherst
County Va. when his will was probated in court. We do
not have the Will Book number but it was on page 128.
We have a copy obtained at Old Tryon Genealogy Society
where his son went to live. His will was recorded 8/29/1788
and is listed in Va Wills and Administrations by Clayton
Torrence. He listed five children, implying that the eldest
two noted above either died young. or perhaps were not really his
children. Those he listed in his will were:
1. Samuel
2. Thomas
3. Caty Cox.had died, her children were
included Anthony, William, Elizabeth
4 .Elizabeth Sength (the "en" is hard to read)
5. Franky Herrill
Also in the will was grandchild , Franky Crawley.
Was this the daughter of one of his 2 eldest daughters, Sarah, or
the other name unknown. Had both of them died previous to
Anthony?
Find a Grave shows a tombstone in the Street Cemetery, Madison
Heights, Amsherst County VA that says “STREET here on their
last plantation lies buried
Anthony Street 1710 – 1790 and
Elizabeth Brockman Street 1715 - 1793”
