JOHN FARIES
John Faries was born about 1750. I
cannot be definite who his parents were. I
would very much like them to be descendants of an early
immigrant from Ireland, Robert Faries. who lived
in Pencader/Red Lion area of New Castle county Delaware.
Faries had a number of spellings: Faries, Fairies,
Phares, Ferris, etc.
Robert had five known sons: William,
John , Arthur, James and Robert.
William Faries did not have a son named
John. and the two sons he did have, did not
have a son John.
John Faries, son of Robert, had no sons, only
daughters
Arthur Faries, had a son John see the
paragraph below.
James Faries is not known to have a son, nor
Robert, son of Robert.
Therefore, I looked at Arthur Faries as a
possible father of our John Faries of Pencader
Delaware.
Re Orphan's Court New Castle county Book C page
131/2. John Faries appeared in Orphans court
in 1750 at the age of 12. His birthdate is given in
the court records. John was born in 1738.
Court was held on Dec. 24, 1750. "John Faires
a minor orphan, son of Arthur Faires, late of of
this county blacksmith aged 12 years the 17th day of March
last past who as well with his own consent and the consent
of William Patterson Exqu and John and William
Fairis his uncles.... is bound an apprentice unto George
Hillis of this county Cordwainer....until he is
21...." George Hillis was to provide
sufficient meal, drink, apparel, washing and lodging and
to teach his the art of cordwining, to read the Bible,
write a legible hand and math to the rule of three.
When he turned 21, Mr. Hillis was to provide him
with appropriate tools, and 2 sets of apparel.
So if this is our John both parents had died by
Dec. 1750, he was born on March 17, 1738,
and his uncles were William and John
Fairies. THIS COULD BE OUR JOHN, but I would
need more confirming details. He seems a bit old
to be our John.
OUR JOHN FARIES
John Faries married Hannah
Edwards in 1774. The Revolution
was just gearing up and John served as a
Lighthorsemen in the company of Captain
Lewis. from the Delaware Archives,
page 1089 listing of that company, also pages
781,782, and 804 note when he was late for muster
call.
On Dec. 12, 1780 John and Hannah bought 307 acres
from her sisters Margaret and Susannah Edwards. This
land was on Old Kings Rd, and Broad Creek Branch. New
Castle Deed Book Vol 5, page 47.
from New Castle county Deed Book E2, page 330 on
Dec. 10, 1783 John and Hannah Faris paid 18 pounds
rent to James Boldin, who possessed land lately
held by John Edwards, deceased. the land was
on Chop Tank Rd. apparently James Bolden held
the adjoining plantation to the Faries and rented
them land for farming. The deed was witnessed by Nathan
and Elisha Bolden. All neighbors and
related. I believe that some, maybe all the land had
been owned by Hannah's parents originally.
John Faries was listed by J. Thomas Scharf in
his History of Delaware as a landowner in Pencader
in both 1791 and 1798.
1. Jacob
* John - another researcher had John as a 2nd child who died as an infant. I do not have source for that.
2. Jonathan
3. Robert
4. Levy
5. Samuel
6. Margaret who married John Bouldin
7. Sarah who married Mr. Wilcox before 1814
8. Ann who married Mr. Boldin before 1814 and had died leaving 2 children William and Lacey Ann
John Bouldin married her sister, Margaret in 1815, his 3rd and last wife.
The last record we have of John Faries is from a New Castle County Deed, Book X Vol 2 page294. I don't know if John Faries and wife were buyers or sellers to /or from Margaret James. The next transaction was made my Hannah in 1807.
Therefore we believe John Faries died between 1802 and 1807.
