JOHN  McCAULLEY

Return to family index

John McCaulley was born in 1807 or 1801 in Delaware. The difference is from the 1850 census verses his tombstone. The name has many variations including McCaulley, McCauley, and McAuley.

On Aug.23, 1827, a John McCaulley married  Mary Fonce in Baltimore at First Methodist of Baltimore. Maryland Marriages 1655-1850   The names and ages fit, and Baltimore is not that far from Cecil County Maryland.  So it is very possible that this is our family.

This information is from the 1850 Cecil county Maryland Census. In the 3rd District, Elkton is found the family of John McCauley age 43 farmer born Delaware
Mary A. age 45 born Delaware
Mary H age 20 born Delaware
Ann Elizabeth age 16 born in Maryland
Julia D. age 14 born in Maryland
George G. age 12 born in Maryland, died 1872 and buried at Elkton Presbyterian church cemetery

The family had moved from Delaware to Maryland between 1830 and 1834.

There were a number of John McCaulleys in Delaware. I have not yet concluded which one is our John. The 1830 Delaware Census has 3 John McC in New Castle County.

 1. John McCawley of Appoquidimink had 1 male 30-40, 1 female 30-40, 1 female 10-15. Doesn't fit.

2.  John McCauley Jr. of St. Georges had 1 male 20-30, 1 male 15-20, and 1 female 20-30. BEST BET, but who is the teenage boy with them. Farm helper, younger brother?
3.  John McCauley
of St. Georges had 1 male 20-30, 1 male 15-20,1 male 40-50, 1 male >100, nd 1 female 20-30, 1 female 30-40. This could fit, but which was John?

I have not been able to trace the males from Barney McCaulley to this John, but it may be that the #3 John was Barney's son and the male >100 is Barney, and #2 John is Barney's grandson, our John from this story..   I have Record from First Presbyterian church of Wilmington that John McCaulley died June 19, 1864 from the old age of 84 years. That would fit the age given for #3 John.  I really don't know and wish I did.

The 1840 census none of the above John's were in Delaware.

The family could not be found on the 1860 census in Cecil County. Their where abouts are unknown until their death.

The Elkton Presbyterian Church Cemetery is right behind the church building on the main street of Elkton, Cecil County. There are two smallish rectangular tombstones and one that stands upright. The upright one reads "In memory of Mary Ann wife of John McCaulley departed this life 1874 in the 70th year of her age."

So after Mary Ann died, John wed a young woman in 1875 who was just 26, "Margaret R."  It reads Margaret R. wife of John McCaulley departed this life 1877 her 28th year her age.  I do not know what her birth name is.

John McCaulley's lies flat next to Margaret. It reads "In memory of John McCaulley departed this life 1876 in the 75th year of his age".
