DOROTHY BALLENTINE

THE STORY AS I KNOW IT.

This story is a combination of family tale and supposition. We don't yet have proof. John Crickmur and Nancy Culpepper were wed in Virginia and immigrated to Kentucky by the early 1820s. The site in Virginia where a number of Crickmurs and Culpeppers could be found was Norfolk.

This piece of "The Story" is about the first two generations of Creekmans to be in Virginia. The link to our Kentucky Crickmurs is still missing.

The name has a number of spelling variations. I will use the one that came with the documentation or story.

Dorothy Ballentine was born about 1655. The Norfolk County, Virginia Deed book 6, page 206, identifies her as the daughter of George Ballentine who died 1702. Norfolk county Wills and Deeds Book E, page 11 further identifies her as the granddaughter of Joane Yates who died in 1666. Joane's daughter Frances Yates married George Ballentine in 1657 in Norfolk.

Dorothy Ballintine married John Creekmur about 1679 in Norfolk. They had the following children:
1. Samuel
2. Jane
3. John Jr.
4. George
5. James
6.. Sarah unmarried in 1708/9
7. Frances unmarried in 1708/9

John was a boatwright. He was also heir to the home plantation on Deep Creek, located on the southern branch of the Elizabeth River.

The last will and testament of John Creekmur was dated 1/4/1708/9 and proved 8/17/1711. This can be found in Norfolk county Deed Book 6, page 206. It mentions "My beloved wife Dorothy my executrix,.. my brother Edmund Creekmore to have my grate iron pot... and land joyning to the Line of Edward Creekmur". And all the children mentioned above with specific bequests. For instance Frances received a mare and the looking glass that was her grandmothers.

The Virginia Genealogist 1966 contains a lengthy compilation of this family called Creekmore Notes compiled by Mabel Thornton and Elizabeth Wingo. This article also contains all the bequests of John Creekmore's will.

It is not known where Dorothy lived after John's death nor when she died.
