Dr. GEORGE NICHOLASON

THE STORY AS I KNOW IT.

George Nicholason may or may not be the father of Nathaniel Nicholas. We will include his story because there is evidence to suggest he was the father of Nathaniel.

The Nicholas Family of Virginia 1722-1829, by Victor D. Golladay states that "Dr. George Nicholas was of lesser gentry in England. He was transported to American from Middlesex County England because of counterfeiting on May 3, 1722. This book is available from UMI Dissertation Information Service, 1-800-521-0600.

The Bertie County Deed Book 1725-1730 of North Carolina state that on Nov 13, 1729 James & Ann Foyle sold 295 acres on the Wickacorne Creek to George Nicholason of Norfolk County Virginia. The land was adjacent to William Willeford, Stephen Williams, and Christopher Holliman.

On Jan 1740 land was sold that had originally been bought from A. Webb. It was described as "..half that track that George Nicholason bought from Stephen Williams including the house and plantation being on the west side.. between Nathaniel Nicholas and Samuel Webb in the Northwest Parish. The witnesses were Nathaniel Nicholas and William Webb.

The Caldwell County, Kentucky History notes the genealogy of the Nichols family. Six brothers had moved together about 1800 to Caldwell County from Bertie County, North Carolina. The most distant ancestor noted in the genealogy was Nathaniel and Mary Nicholas. They were the grandparents of the six brothers. The History states that Nathaniel was born in England.

The dates and names of deeds granted that are listed in The Bertie Index by Edythe S. Dunstan are:
1729 George Nicholson
1736 William Nichols
1740 Willis Nicholas
1741 Nathaniel Nicholas
1741 John Nicolson
We believe it possible that George Nicholson was the father of Nathaniel and probably the other men listed.

We do not have any knowledge of a marriage. The Caldwell History file says that Nathaniel was born in England. If George is his father then George was transported with family or may have brought them over later. There are many open questions.

We do not know when George died but believe it to be before his "track of land" was sold in Jan 1740.
