THE STORY AS I KNOW IT

With the Brockman family we are reaching as far back as the 14th century. William Everett Brockman has written A Genealogical chart of the Brockmans. The story needs confirmation. An English book Kent Parish Records, Newington Marriages lists at least four Brockmans from a period of 1566 to 1623. They are in the place and at the time William E. Brockman asserts. One of the four matches the genealogical data exact the others are other sons not connected to our line.

John Brokeman was born about 1360 probably in Bocking parish, Baintree (Braintree), Essex. This is the first known Brockman of this line. In 1379 he was Chaplain of the Free Chapel of Brokenfold. In 1390 Richard II granted to John Brokeman lands in Essex that included the Manor of Pirre and extended into Romney and Old Medley with other lands in Stowting and Crundale. Another name for Pirre was Wyjondesse which was mentioned in the Valor Ecclesiastics and received a 1/8 fee from the Archbishop in 1347. This is all from W.E. Brockman's research. There is a Romney in Kent and the family later lived in Kent but perhaps all these lands would be found near each other in Essex. Research with old maps is needed to locate them.

A drawing was made from a 1926 photograph of the Manor of Pirre, or Perry Manor. It is found in W. E. Brockman's book.

The grant was in honor of the Brockman participation in the Crusades led by Richard the 1st, Lionheart between 1189 & 1199. John Brokeman was awarded a coat-of-arms by the College of Heralds. It contained the crusader's cross and sword passing through the deer's head. We have a black and white copy. If you would like a copy please CONTACT US.

John's parents are unknown as is his wife. However, all sources state that his son was William Brockman born about 1415 at Bocking. Another source for this information is "Record of the Brockman and Drake-Brockman Family" by D.H. Drake-Brockman, published in 1933. This is supported by the entry in "Burkes Knightage and Landed Gentry" 104th edition. Drake suggests that John had two children:
1. William Brockman, born about 1415 wed Elizabeth Fryer about 1445
2. Mary Brockman wed William Knatchbull.

Nothing further is known about John Brokeman.
