THE STORY AS I KNOW IT

The Chillon or Shelton family is connected to the Brockman family in England. With the Brockmans we are reaching as far back as the 14th century. William Everett Brockman has written A Genealogical chart of the Brockmans. The story needs confirmation. An English book Kent Parish Records, Newington Marriages lists at least four Brockmans from a period of 1566 to 1623. They are in the place and at the time William E. Brockman asserts. One of the four matches the genealogical data exact the others are other sons not connected to our line.

Thomas Chillon was born about 1480 in Kent England. His parents are unknown. However, it is known that he was of the landed gentry and part of a larger family. 200 years later members of his family, Chillon or Chilton immigrated to America and there became Shelton.

It is not known who Thomas married. They had at least one and maybe two daughters. The writer, William Everett Brockman identifies without name "the daughter and heiress of Thomas Chilton (Sheltons of Virginia)". This is supported and expanded by D. H. Drake's Record of the Brockman and Drake-Brockman Family. Drake gives the daughter the two possible names of Rebecca or Thomasina.

Miss Chillon was born about 1510 in Newington Kent. It is possible that Thomas Chillon had two daughters, but obviously he had no son that lived to inherit.

The daughter married Henry Brockman about 1530 in Newington.

Henry became an extensive landowner. He purchased Newington Manor and Cheriton Manor. He "acquired Beachborough". As his wife was an heiress, we can assume that her inheritance helped expand their estate. The wording "acquired" may mean that was her Chillon home.

It is not known when Thomas Chillon died or where he is buried.

The Chillon family had other lines that continued on and eventually members migrated to America. W.E. Brockman notes all the families that had intermarried and were found in the late 1600s in Virginia. The St. Leger family settled in King and Queen County VA. Brockman and Brodnax immigrated to Virginia. The Chillon, became Shelton, one of the early wealthy Virginia families. They had the first brewery in Albermarle County, Virginia.
