WILLIAM GREGG Sr.
THE STORY AS I KNOW IT
John Gregg (possibly Mac Gregor) is believed to have
been the father of William Gregg Sr., the subject of our
story. John Gregg was a Scotsman who was presented with an
Ivory headed cane by King James I because of the help Mr. Gregg
had been moving Scots to North Ireland. That move is said
to have occurred in 1618. Mr. Gregg received also a Barony
Glenarm on the north east coast of Ireland 20+ miles north of
Belfast.
All online records of his son William Gregg Sr. said he was born about 1616 in Glenarm,Antrim Ireland (now North Ireland). However, I think it very likely he was born in Scotland and moved with his parents when he was two years old. He was the only son of 3 to survive childhood. His parents may have been John Mac Gregor and Ann Palmer. from an Ancestry family tree. All dates and names need confirming. Family Search has the details noted in this story, but not documentation.
William Gregg married Mary Grace James 1641
In Glenarm. They had 4 children:
1. John Gregg born 1640 - died 1724
2. William
Gregg born 1642 - died 1687
3. Richard Gregg born 1644 - died 1741
4. Joanna Gregg born 1645 - died 1741
I'm sure a Barony sounds like a grand life, but they were
Protestants in a Catholic land. The time when William
Jr. was born was a time of heavy push back by the
Catholics, though in the end, they would lose the rule they had
known. There was anIrish uprising of Carrifergus in
May, 1653. William Gregg Sr. walked
away from his Glenarm Barony in northern Ireland and moved his
family to the shore of Waterford County in southern Ireland.
They settled in Ardmore, raised their family there and both William
Gregg and his wife, Mary Grace died there about
1672.
