SAMUEL BROCKMAN
THE STORY AS I KNOW IT
Samuel Brockman was born about 1680 possibly in St.
Mary's County Maryland. His father was
Henry Brockman. His mother is
currently unknown. It is suggested that her name was Rebecca Samuells.
It is suggested in Orange County Families that Henry died while Samuel was still a boy. His mother remarried Mr. Pettie and they moved to Orange County Virginia. The families Pettie, Madison, Henderson, Woolfolk and Sim all had land adjoining in Orange County and their sons and daughters married each other.
Samuel married Mary
Collins. At least a leading Brockman
historian, Paul R. Brockman states her name was Collins
and gives a substantial history. I have not seen the
documentation yet. there are others who say she was
Mary Madison and another Mary Henderson.
I would love to know the path to follow.
Mr. Paul R. says they had 8 children with
one dying young. The children may be:
1. Sarah Brockman, born Nov. 14, 1704 in King
& Queen County VA, wed John Henderson in 1732
2. Samuel Brockman, born about 1706, wed Rebecker
(maybe) Salmon by 1744. He died 1790.
3. William Brockman, born 1708, wed Elizabeth
Mason by 1748. His will was proved 1809. He
was "of Albemarle".
4. Elizabeth Brockman,
born about 1710, wed Anthony
Street. She died after 1800.
5. John Brockman, born about 1712, wed Mary
Collins by 1734. He died 1756.
6. Mary Brockman born about 1715 wed Richard
Hunt Singleton.
7. Rachel Brockman, born about 1717, wed John
Rogers
8. daughter (maybe Susanna) born about 1720, Mr.
Haley
The Henderson family had obtained a patent for
1000 acres of land on the North Anna River in
Spotsylvania Va in 1728. Samuel Brockman
purchased 300 acres of the patent, which became known as
"Greenway" about 1732. It stayed in the Brockman
family until 1971. That section of Spotsylvania
became Orange County. The Orange county VA Deed Books
1 & 2 for 1735 - 1738 compiled by John Frederick
Dorman places the land. "Daniel Cook of St.
Mark's Parish sold land in the fork of Purmunky
River. It bordered on Samuel Brockmans'
land." Today's map shows the North Anna and the South
Anna Rivers come together in Hanover County to make the
Purmunky River.
Samuel Brockman wrote his will in November 1762. Orange
county VA, Will Book 2. It was proved in 1766 and
names "my daughter Elizabeth Street". It is listed
in Pamunkey Neighbors, a history of early
Orange County VA. It also names all the sons, Rachel
Rogers, Mary Singleton and Sarah
Henderson, but not Mary nor Mrs Haley.
His wife was still alive and the division of the estate
was not to take place until her death. On January 15,
1776. That division took place and can be found in
Orange County Will Book 3, page 123. It was divided
to the following individuals:
Anthony Street
Samuel Brockman
John Webb
Samuel Brockman Jr.
Jonathan Haley
William Brockman
Rachel Roger
Jonathan Henderson
I'm not sure how John Webb fits however, Richard
H. Singleton is not listed so perhaps he had died
and daughter Mary had wed John Webb. .
The original order to settle and divide the estate was
given in Orange County Court on Sept 27, 1775.
Samuel and William Brockman were executors. Mr.
Paul R Brockman states that Mary Brockman,
Samuel's widow died in Orange County VA on January
15, 1776.
Samuel and Mary Brockman are buried at the family cemetery at Greenway.
