WILLIAM BROCKMAN
THE STORY AS I KNOW IT
With the Brockman family we are reaching as far back as the 14th century. William Everett Brockman has written A Genealogical chart of the Brockmans. The story needs confirmation. An English book Kent Parish Records, Newington Marriages lists at least four Brockmans from a period of 1566 to 1623. They are in the place and at the time William E. Brockman asserts. One of the four matches the genealogical data exactly. The other four are not connected to our line.
There are many sons, thus many lines and there seems to be no agreement as to which son goes with which father. The confusion is compounded by the use of a very few names. Henry, William and John appear way to often for comfort.
This is one possible link.
William Brockman was born in 1531 in Kent England, possibly at Newington. His parent's were Henry Brockman and the daughter and heiress of Thomas Chilton. Her name may have been Rebecca. When that family emigrated to Virginia, their name was spelled Shelton. This family had a number of properties in Kent. William's father had purchased Newington Manor, Cheriton Manor and Beachborough
William wed Margaret Clarke about 1555.
He is the only known son of Henry which means he was probably the oldest son and inherited the property. Therefore he was a man of means and importance.
The only son known born to William and Margaret was Henry Brockman, born about 1560. This Henry wed Helen Sawking about 1590
William died on April 16, 1605 at age 74. His wife, Margaret died Feb. 5, 1610. She was then 73. They are buried at Newington. There is probably a tablet at Newington Church giving that information.
