LOUISA COOK
THE STORY AS I KNOW IT
Louisa L. Cook was born about 1795. It is very possible she is of the Cook family that was in Caldwell County Kentucky by 1800, but we cannot identify her parents.
There was a James Cook born 1768 whose wife Sarah gave birth to Cullen 1800 in Caldwell County. The Caldwell County Tax List 1812-1814 lists both a William Cook and a John Cook. Any of these could have been Louisa's father. Of course she may have come from a neighboring county or immigrated into the county. This is an area that needs lots of research.
Louisa Cook married Johnson Laughlin Dec 21, 1818 in Caldwell County by John Travis Justice of the Peace. From the Caldwell County Marriage Bonds from 1809. There were a lot of Cooks getting married about that time. From 1809 to 1820 the LDS IGI of KY lists 10 in Caldwell County. In 1818 alone Anna Cook and Betsy Cook also were married.
On the 1820 Caldwell County Census we find the Johnson
Laughlin family listed with 1 male 16-26, 1 male and
2 females 16-25. So one would be Louisa, who
is the other woman?
On the 1830 Caldwell County Census we find the Johnson
Laughlin family listed as 1 male 40-50, 1 male
20-30, 1 male 10-15, 2 females 5-10, and 2 females under
5.
Louisa Cook Laughlin had probably died by 1830 and
with 2 girls under 5, just a few years before 1830.
According to the LeBlanc Genealogy Johnson
married the second time to Mildred Waller or Walker
January 1831. I've not seen any documentation yet
for this.
We had believed Johnson Laughlin and Louisa
were the parents of Sarah Jane
Laughlin born Jan 4, 1826 because at Sarah Jane's
wedding to Sanders A. Crowell,
Johnson was a witness along with S.A. Crowell
and Benjamin Crowell.
