MRS. MARGARET CHAPMAN

THE STORY AS I KNOW IT

With the Brockman family we are reaching as far back as the 14th century. William Everett Brockman has written A Genealogical chart of the Brockmans. The story needs confirmation.

Mrs. Margaret Chapman was born about 1480 possibly in Essex or Kent England. Her parents are unknown.

Margaret married Mr. Chapman about 1500. Nothing is known about him. He died within ten years. They had at least three children which were mentioned in the will of her 2nd husband. They were:
1. Thomas Chapman, the monke of Fenschand
2. Wylliam Chapman
3. Alice Chapman. By 1525, when the will was written she had the name Browne.

Nothing is known about Fenschand. It may be a monastery.

Margaret then married William Brockman about 1508. He had inherited his father’s estate at Essex, Powers Hall in Witham. It had been granted to the family in 1390. The house was still lived in when the Brockman piece was written in 1945.

Margaret and William had three known children
1. Henry Brockman born about 1510, married daughter of Thomas Chillon or Chilton. He died 1573.
2. Joan Brockman
3. Thomas Brockman

William and his family moved to Kent County. When he died in 1525 he left a will mentioning his wife, her children and his 3 children. He was buried in the Chancel of Newington Church.

A transcription of the Last Will and Testament of William Brokeman, 1525 was sent to me by Basil in Canada. Another Brockman tracker had sent it to him. I do not know where the original is located or if it still exists.

It is not known when Margaret died or where she is buried.
