NATHANIEL HUBBARD

THE STORY AS I KNOW IT.

Nathaniel Hubbard was born in 1826 either in Kentucky or Tennessee. His family would have moved to Kentucky from Tennessee about the time of his birth.

His parents may have been Joseph Hubbard and Susanah Womack. A complete analysis of this couple and their relation to the Caldwell Hubbards can be found under The story of Joseph Hubbard. However, it is based on the fact that the 1830 and 1840 Caldwell County Census lists a Joseph Hubbard with a family that had a child that fit Nathaniel's description. This is speculation and still needs documentation.

Another possibility is a Nathaniel Hubbard on the Hopkins County 1830 Census with a son under five years of age. Children of this Nathaniel moved to Caldwell County, so our young Nathaniel may have also. The elder Nathaniel wed Margaret Butler. Hopkins County is just east of Caldwell County. The family had 6 sons and 2 daughters living at home in 1830. With thanks to Leroy Armstrong for bringing him to my attention.

Nathaniel Hubbard was married to Sarah Perry on May 10, 1845 in Caldwell County by James C. Wiler. Caldwell County Marriages 1804 - 1891

The 1850 Caldwell County Census shows the family to be made up of:
Nat Hubbard, age 24, born TN
Sarah Hubbard, age 30, born KY
Eliza J. Hubbard, age 4, born KY
Robert P. Hubbard, age 1, born KY
John Perry, age 36, born KY – not sure what his relation to Sarah is, if any.

The History of Caldwell County by Clausine Baker has a Perry family bio. Three Perry siblings married Hubbards: Nathaniel, Butler and Irenia. It also states that "Butler Hubbard came from Virginia about 1820". According to the 1850 Caldwell Census Butler was born in 1812 in KY, Irenia was born 1818 in KY, but Nathaniel was born 1826 in Tennessee. These Hubbards may be siblings, or not. Nathaniel seems not to belong to this set.

Much of the following information came from the work of Caldwell County Genealogist, Gregory Watson. The family probably lived in the country near Farmersville on a farm. The Caldwell County Vital Statistics, Births by Brenda Joyce Jerome show that the family lived on Montazuma or Wilson Warehouse Rd.

Nathaniel must have died sometime between 1856 and 1860. The 1860 Census shows Sarah has head of household and family:
Mrs. S. Hubbard, age 40, Family Governess with real estate value $1100 and personal estate $270.
Eliza Hubbard, age 14
Robert Hubbard, age 11
Joseph Hubbard, age 8
Thomas Hubbard, age 5
John Hubbard, age 3.

Another 1860 Caldwell Census shows slightly altered details:
Mrs. S. Hubbard, age 36 – family governess, real estate value $1200,and personal estate $525
Jane, age 14
Robert, age 13
Joseph, age 8
Thomas, age 5
John, age 3
Wiley Perry, age 44 – farm hand. Sarah had many brothers, one was William and one was Whitnell. Either could have been called Wiley.

The data known of the children of Nathaniel and Sarah are this:
1. Eliza Jane born April 1846 wed Nathan Fralick March 1896.
2. Robert Patterson Hubbard born May 5, 1849 wed Anna Louisa Nichols.
3. Joseph Hubbard born Jan 9,1852 never married. He lived with his brother’s children, Robert P., when they were orphaned until his death in 1928. He is buried in the Perry Cemetery.
4. Thomas Hubbard, born Jun 23, 1852 and died in 1895. He is also buried in Perry Cemetery. There is no wife noted on his tombstone so he may not have married either.
5. John Hubbard born 1857, married Allie, last name unknown

Nathaniel was a young man when he died, age 30 - 34.. His son, Thomas was just 43 when he died? It would be good to know what caused their deaths. He is buried in the Perry Cemetery. It is found just off Route 293, about 4 miles northeast of Princeton, Caldwell County, Kentucky. Sarah is also named on Nathaniel’s stone simply as "Sarah, his wife 1820 – 1883". She never remarried.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

  1. What is Nathaniel’s birth date and birthplace?
