THE STORY AS I KNOW IT

The Hartmann family can be traced in Gellershausen bei Wildungen, Waldeck region of Germany to at least mid 1700s.  The wonderful Waldeckische Ortsippenbucher Band 62.  (Hochgrebe, Heinrich; Waldeckischer Geschichtsverein e.V. Bad Arolsen; 1998. History of the village of Gellershausen. contains stories and photos of villages plus an extensive index of family surnames and data taken mostly from Church records. Written in German. Scott Hanson alerted me to the book and Christa Siems provided us with the book itself. The present administrator of the village, Herr Muench, has also provided information   I am very grateful!

Henriette Theis  was born April 14, 1782 in Affoldern. We don't know her parents. This is a village a few miles to the northeast of Gellershausen.  On October 8, 1807, Henriette Theis wed Alexander Fuchs, a miller  in Gellershausen. page 92 of the Ortsippenbucher Band 62.

Gellershausen is one of 13 small villages that make up the administrative community of Edertal.  At the time  Gellershausen was in the small Principality of Waldeck.  Waldeck continues as a small city north of Edertal.  Waldeck and the Edertal communities are now part of Hesse Germany.  They lie in the northwest of Hesse and about 40 kilometers southwest of Kassel.  They are in the foothills and forests of the low Kellerwald mountain range.

Henriette and Alexander Fuchs had the following children: all listed on page 92

			1. Marie Wilhelmine Henriette Fuchs b. Jan 1, 1813, wed Carl Hartmann and died Aug 28, 1855
2. Henriette Catharine Marie Fuchs b. Aug 28, 1815, died March 25, 1818
3. Heinrich Christian Fuchs b.Aug 7, 1817, wed Katharine Muench and died June 6, 1892
4. Marie Elisabeth Fuchs b Jan 31, 1821, died within 2 weeks.
5. Johannette Marie Fuchs b. March 8, 1822
, moved to Bringhausen, probably wed and died there Oct. 27, 1857
6. August Heinrich Christian Fuchs b. Sept. 9, 1824 and died on first birthday
7. Johannette Elisabeth Fuchs b. Dec. 29, 1831, moved to Frebershausen, probably wed and died Jan 24, 1895

Henriette Fuchs died April 7, 1841.  She was 59 years old.  Her husband Alexander Fuchs lived another 8 years.  He died Dec 2, 1849.  It is not know where either are buried, but there is only one church in the village and I know it has a cemetery.
