THE STORY AS I KNOW IT

Gary Burns states in his  the McMasters family of Cecil county, page 12  that Ann Dobbin and her husband Andrew McMaster lived on and farmed the land given to her by her grandfather, James Perry of Chester County.  That would mean her mother was a Perry, father a Dobbin.  The story sounds solid, but I cannot find any data to support it.  And I have a problem with the first name.  I can say that Andrew McMaster's wife was born about 1800 possibly in Chester County PA,  or in Cecil county Md just over the border from PA.  We don't know who her parents were. I will continue to think of her as a Dobbin.

I  found 2 men that were possibly her father.  The first was a John Dobbins on the Chester County PA 1800 Census film 363339, Roll 36, page 778, a young family, but in West Calm which is in the north section of the county.  I also found a different John Dobbins buying land in Cecil county on Elks Neck in 1809, Cecil County Deed Book JS 5, page 434.  He was a merchant from Mount Holly New Jersey.

I can find James Perry on the 1790 and 1800 Chester County Census in East Nottingham.  This is right on the border with Cecil Ct MD.   I can find Andrew McMaster on the 1820 Census, Chester County East Nottingham, right next to William Perry.   So this is probably the grandfather alluded to.  However, I cannot find any specifics about his family.  There were a number of Perrys in East Nottingham.  Probably fathers, sons, uncles, but so far I don't know how they are related.  Their names were Risdon, William, Ebenezer, George, Sarah Jane, Matthew and James Perry.

I can track the Andrew McMaster family through the Chester County East Nottingham Census', 1820, 1830 and 1840.  That gives the number of children and ages.  I can then track them by name into the 1850 Census.  Also Gary Burns listed 3 of the children by name.  I could find each.  So the story below is a summary from these sources. The 1830 Census was on Film 0020622, roll 148, page 261.  1840 census film 0020542, Roll 454, page 232.

Ms. Dobbin married Andrew McMaster about 1813 probably in Chester County PA.  They had 3 children.  They were:
1.  Robert James McMaster born 1814 wed Elizabeth
2.  Mary K. McMaster born 1817 wed William Ewing
3.  Joseph A.  McMaster born 1820 wed Mary

It is believed that Ann Dobbin mcMaster died sometime between 1820 and 1826.  In 1829 the Chester County Archives has a record (probably from orphan's Court) that states Andrew McMaster became the guardian for a 5-year-old boy names Jesse Watson.  and that Jesse had lived with him since 1826.  I believe that in 1826 Andrew married the widow Margaret Watson, widow of John WatsonJesse Watson died in Delaware in 1890.  His death certificate lists his parents to be John and Margaret Watson.

It is not known where Ann Dobbin McMaster was buried.
