HENRY RILE PENNOCK
THE STORY AS I KNOW IT
The Pennock family was a leading Quaker family in
colonial Pennsylvania. The descendants are numerous. Three
known books have been written about them:
The Pennocks of Primitive Hall by George Valentine
Massey II,
The Pusey Family by Pennock Pusey, and
Christopher Pennock Genealogy, compiled by Charles
A. Rudolph, 1959.
Henry Rile Pennock was born 8/29/1880 probably in
Wilmington Delaware. He was the son of Thomas Hughes Pennock and Martha
Mary Missimer. He was their first child and
the couple had settled in Wilmington after their marriage.
The family lived at 621 W. 7th St. His father owned
the Thomas H. Pennock and John T. Dickey Clothing
and Men's Furnishings store at 426 Market St. Wilmington City Directory
1900, page 747. In the 1901 Directory the
store was shown at 21 Market St.
The Wilmington City Directories help follow the
family. from 1900 - 1902 Henry is a
student. We do not know where he studied but by 1906
he was a Physician with an office at 801 Vandever Av. We
don't know yet where he studied medicine. He may
have commuted to Philadelphia, an easy train ride. He was
still living at home on 7th St. with his mother, who was
widowed in 1901, a sister C. Erma and brother
Paul T. Henry was not in the 1905
Directory, but by 1906 was back home.
In 1908 Henry purchased a house at 508 W. 9th
street, and the whole family moved in with him. He
continued the office on Vandever Av, but also opened one
in his home.
On Jan 12, 1910 Henry married Etta Cooper Boulden. She worked with him in his home centered office. They lived in the house on 9th Street where Dr. Pennock had his private practice on the first floor. The family lived in the top two floors of the house with access to the first floor kitchen via a back staircase.
Henry and Etta had two children:
1. Catherine Ann born April 11, 1912
2. Thomas Henry born Feb 26, 1915
Henry died Nov 24, 1922 at just 42 years of age. Etta remarried in the late 30's and moved to Connecticut. She returned to Wilmington after the death of her second husband and died in 1973. Henry and Etta Pennock are both buried in Riverview Cemetery in Wilmington.
