MARY BUDO or BUDD

Return to Home Page

Mary Budd was born about 1680.  Nothing is known about her parents or upon which continent she was born.  The records of Old Herring Creeke Parish (now St. James Parish) in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, record a Vestry meeting held on September 25, 1701 where Mary Budd was appointed to serve the Minister Henry Hall as punishment for having a "Mallatto Bastard".  Apparently she was in service and the birth "made trouble fo the house where it was born".  She was discharged in August 1701 and began her service for Master Hall.   I do not know the fate of the child.

Very shortly thereafter, on Dec 11, 1701 Mary wed Thomas Shekel in St. James Parish, Anne Arundel County, Maryland. From the St. James Parish Abstract found at Maryland Archives.    St. James Parish was mostly the southern part of Anne Arundel County below West River and Muddy Creek.  A more recent building of St James Church today is located on Rt 2 south of Annapolis.

The Parish Records contains the baptizmal dates for three children born to Mary and Thomas Shekel.  They are:
1.  Thomas, born April 13, 1702, baptized Mrch 26, 1703.
2.  John, born Jan 11, 1704.
3.  Elizabeth, born Jan 22, 1708, baptized August 14, 1709.

The children of a Richard and Ruth Shekell are noted in the 1740s.  He may have been another child of Thomas and Mary.

Thomas Shekell died about 1721.  His estate was inventoried in Feb. 1722.  Anne Arundel Prerogative court Inventories Book 8, page 39. Thomas did not leave much of an estate:  no land, a few animals, and tools, total value after bills were paid was 3 pounds, 6 pence. The Inventory was signed by Thomas' "next of kin", ie his widow, then Mary Neale.  She  had married again to Thomas Neale, a widower with young children.

There were three Neale children: ages 7, 9 and 17.  Her own were mostly in their late teens, so they should have been a help. Mary was the administratrix of Thomas Neale's estate when he died in 1740. from the Origins of the Shekell Family in colonial Maryland: Thomas Shekell, Mary Budd, and their Children by Joanne and Richard Shekell

It is not known when Mary Budd Shekell Neale died or where she is buried.  There is an old cemetery at St. James.  Perhaps she rests there.
