MARY BLACKMAN
In the Charles county Gentry by Harry Wright
Newman, is a chapter on the Dent Family.
When he got to John Dent, which I call "III", on
page 64, he states that Mary, his wife was probably
connected to the Blackman family as there were at
least three of her grandchildren that carried the name,
such as Thomas Blackman Davis, son of Anne Dent
and Charles Davis, born 1782. Taking that as
a possible, even probable line, this file was
created. However, I am still looking for
documentation.
Mary Blackman was born about 1710 possibly in St.
Mary’s County, Maryland. Her parents are unknown.
There were two couples in that county at that time with
the name Blackman, and one other man that occurs
in official records. One of which may be a parent.
1. John Blackman was transported in 1663. Liber
6, folio 268, noted in
Early Settlers of MD by Gust Skordas. John was
listed as owing debts to
Richard May in Feb. 1675 in St. Mary's Ct.
In Aug. 1679 the court
indicated he had not paid up and was either "gone or
dead". Abstracts of
Inventories & Accounts of Prerogative Court of MD
1674-79, 1699-
1703 compiled by V.L.Skinner Jr. .
2. William Blackman was transported in
1679. Liber 15, folio 565,
Skordas. Skordas also notes William listed
1667 for service. He died in
1712 and only his wife, Cecilia is mentioned in
the will filed in St. Mary's.
3. Thomas and Elizabeth Blackman. Thomas
was paid from an estate in
June 1714. St. Mary's Wills Reel 39, Page 252. There is an
inventory of
his estate 1747.
Mary wed John Dent III in Charles County Maryland about 1735. The Dent family has connections to Newport, in Charles County and Chaptico Hundred in St. Mary’s County. The two sites are near each other at the county line.
John Dent II died intestate in 1733. His eldest son, our John Dent III inherited the estate "Dent’s Inheritance. John III divided the estate of 1169 acres amongst all his brothers.
The Charles County MD 1733 Tax List has John Dent (III) as 1 taxable individual in Newport West side Lower Port.
The children of Mary and John were:
1. John Dent IV born about 1736
2. Mary Dent born about 1738
3. Hatch Dent born1751, died 1819 ( re gdent@mindspring.com
there was a Hatch Dent son of Hatch Dent
who this may be confused with
4. Sarah Dent born about 1742 married John
Clark
5 Tabitha Dent born
1743, wed Walter Moreland
died after 1790
6. Anne Dent born about 1745 wed Charles Davis

John III made various conveyances of land from
1757 to 1777. Each time Mary waived her dower
rights. The properties were on the north side of Piles’
Fresh., which is how we know her name was Mary. Charles
County Deed Book V, no 3, page 201
John Dent III took the oath of allegiance to the State of Maryland in Charles County in 1778. Found in the DAR library Unpublished Maryland Records Vol. 5.
John Dent III made a will dated December 21, 1788 and proved August 22, 1791. Charles County Will book AK No 11, page 28. Mary, his wife is not mentioned so we assume she had died sometime between 1777 and 1788.
It is not known where she is buried.
