JOHN BOSWELL
John Boswell, was born about 1635 most
likely in UK. He was in Charles County
Maryland by 1667 and probably earlier. His
parents are unknown.
John Boswell first appears in the records when he
registered cattle marks in 1667 and 1672. His son Matthew
Boswell also had cattle mark registered in 1672.
Charles County Court and Land Record 1665-1695.
I don't know how old a man needed be to register his own
cattle mark but I would guess at least by 16. So Matthew
could have been born c 1655, which is how I approximated John's
birth date.
On Nov. 10, 1674, John Boswell purchased a parcel
of land called Job's Comfort, 200 acres from John
Hackister.. It lay on the east side of the
main urn of Portobacco Creek.

In 1682 John Boswell owed money in Charles
County. Abstracts and Inventory and Accounts of
Prerogative court of Maryland 1677-1682 by Vernon L.
Skinner.
We know he married Mary or Marie, birth name
unknown but we don't know when. When he left her a
widow he had 6 children. They are listed in Charles
county Court Liber N, page 151 and again on page 209.
The first May 1, 1686 was a Deed of gift, ie goods and
cattle from Marie Boswel, widow of John Boswell
to her 6 children: in order given
1. Mathew Boswel,
2. Michael Boswel
3. William Boswel
born 1682. On Dec. 6, 1720, William Boswell gave
a Deposition regarding a track of land, Friendship.
In that deposition he gives his age as 38, hence
the 1682 birth year.
Charles county MD Land Records M2, page 107.
4. John Boswel
5. Marie Boswel
6. Martha Boswell
So John Boswell had died prior to May 1, 1686.
His widow, Marie married George Pouncy after
May 1 1686 and before April 6, 1687. The 2nd court
record was a Deed of gifts of household goods and cattle
from George Pouncy to the children of his wife Mary
Pouncy to be received immediately after her
death. Again there are 6 names and all are the same
except for Michael - it was transcribed as
Mitchell Boswel.
Marie Boswel Pouncy died sometime before June 1690
and so had her son John Boswel. For on June
10, 1690 Charles county Land Records, Liber Q, page 11,
Matthew Bozwell, "eldest son of John Bozwell,
deceased" made a petition to the court that the younger
brother of Mathew, John Bozwell, now also deceased,
was possessed of diverse goods and chattels now in
possession of George Pounsey. The court
order Pounsey to convey the goods to Matthew
Bozwell.
