PETER JONES
The Story As I Know It:
Peter Jones was born about 1700 probably in
Maryland on the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay.
It is not known who his parents were. There was a
Peter Jones of Kent County that is easily confused with
our, but I believe they are separate individuals.
Probably cousins, if I can find the connection.
The other Peter Jones is believed he was the son
of Thomas and Elizabeth
Jones. Thomas
left a will written in Nov. 22, 1748, proved July 9, 1749
that names his wife three sons, William, Jacob and Peter, and 3
daughters. re. Jane
Baldwin Cotton. 1991. Maryland Calendar of
Wills, 1748-1753.
Vol. 10, page 40. This Peter Jones
married Mary Bollas in Kent county Maryland and had
a son Jacob Jones. However, the Kent County
Md Peter Jones continued buying and selling well
after our Peter Jones had died.
Jones were found in both Kent County
Delaware and Kent and Cecil Counties Maryland and
they may be connected. The line between Delaware and
Maryland is purely a surveyors line. If there were not
markers, you could not tell when you crossed from one
state to the other. The line was not clearly stated until
Mason and Dixon drew it c 1765.
Peter Jones actively engaged in buying and selling
land. Cecil Ct.
Deed book 6, page 57. on March 24th 1740 Peter
Jones bought part of land grant called None So
Fine in Finland from John Campbell for 290
pounds for about 150 acres. Thomas Jones,
testified on his behalf. A few years later, he
purchased the remainder of the original land grant.
Cecil Ct. Deed Book 6, page 425 on Oct. 2, 1744, Peter
Jones purchased c 158 acres from Rachel Croker,
widow for 115 pounds and about 300 pounds of
tobacco. The original land grant was for 350
acres. He now owns 308 acres.
Directly across the open water to the north lies the
historic Mt. Harmon. open to the public during mild
months. The house there was built about 1730 and
functioned actively well past the time None So fine in
Finland was in the Jones family. Mt. Harmon is a
grand 3 story brick home that was set on a dock from which
the owner owned his own schooner for shipping tobacco to
England and returning with fine goods for the elegant
house. Thus it is entirely possible that None So
Fine was also the home of some grandeur as well.
Sadly, on Feb. 19, 1750 the Cecil County Maryland Deed Book 7, page 254 has
a valuation of "land, plantation, houses, out houses
and orchards belonging to Jacob Jones, orphan and heir at law of Peter Jones late of
Cecil County, deceased. The plantation was 308 acres
called None so Fine in Finland, on the north
side of the Sassafras River on a neck between the river
and Back Creek. Joseph Redgrave is listed as
guardian, which strongly suggest there is no living
widow.
Peter Jones is thus known to have only one child: Jacob Jones born
c1734.
