MARGARET CRICKMUR
THE STORY AS I KNOW IT.
The name spelling has a number of variations. We will use whichever was used in the specific documentation or story.
Margaret (Peggy) Crickmur was born 1819 in Virginia or North Carolina. The 1860 Census gives her birthplace as Virginia. The 1870 Census gives her birthplace as North Carolina. Either way it implies she and her family lived in both places. Her parents were John Creekmur and Nancy (Byer) Culpepper. They died in Caldwell County Kentucky. They may have spent time enroute in North Carolina.
Margaret was married to Josiah Nichols on Oct. 5, 1844 in Caldwell County, Kentucky by James C. Willer. This is recorded in Caldwell County Marriages 1807-1891.
The 1850 Caldwell County Census lists the family
as:
Josiah Nichols age 40, born Caldwell Ct
Margarett, age 31, born Virginia
Eli Nichols age 4
Ann L. Nichols age 1
month
John W. Smith, age 7, born Trigg City, KY
Margaret's granddaughter stated that Margaret and Josiah raised Willson Smith, Margaret's sister's son, and that he was about 5 years older than Eli. However, the list of Margaret's siblings prepared by Caldwell County Genealogist, Gregory Watson does not have any Smith family. Margaret was 10th of 11 children. Perhaps he was a grandson of one of her older siblings.
The 1860 Caldwell County Census states that the
family was
made up of:
Josiah Nichols, age 50, born in Kentucky, farmer,
value of real
estate was $1000, personal estate $1400.
Margarete, age 40, born in Virginian, housewife
Eli, age 13 born in Kentucky
Ann , age 10 born in Kentucky
and they had 2 farm hands:
W. P. Dent
J. W. Smith, Peggy's nephew.
The 1870 Caldwell County Census states that the
family was:
Josiah Nichols age 60, born Ky. Real Estate Value
$500, Personal
$1000
Margaret, age 51, born NC.
Eli, age 24, taught school
Robert P. Hubbard, age
21 farm
laborer
Anne L. Hubbard, age 20. their daughter
Eli Nichols went on to serve as State Representative in Frankfort.
Margaret was not found on the 1880 Caldwell Census living with either Eli's nor Anne's families. Need to keep looking.
Margaret died March 4, 1904. She is buried in the Perry Cemetery. Josiah died in June 4, 1876 and is also buried there. The mother of their son-in-law, Robert Patterson Hubbard was Sarah Perry.
