HUGH    MORRISON

Return to Family Index

Hugh Morrison was born  about 1670.  It is not known where and when.  In fact his story is hard to pin down in many details. A History of the Morrison Family by Leonard Allison Morrison & FWL Thomas,  In chapter XIX, page 420 under "Delaware Branch"  it asserts that Hugh Morrison and his wife were from Scotland.  Did they marry there, or in PA?

There is a Delaware Deed recorded Dec. 5, 1727, New Castle County Deed Book H1, page 228, where Hugh Morrison of London Grove Township in Chester County PA, yeoman, purchased 170 acres lying on both sides of White Clay Creek from Danid and Mary Lewis.  This is the only place where I can find mention of Hugh Morrison being in London Grove.

The farm is mostly on the south side of the creek and near present day Ogletown.  It continued in the family for many generations.

It is not known whom Hugh married, but they had at least 7 children:  They were named in an indenture from Delaware land Records, page 311, roll #5 that had the land turned over to the eldest son, Neil and listed all the other children of Hugh Morrison deceased as of May 3, 1750.  In the document they were identified as
1.  Neil Morrison, eldest son
2.  Elizabeth Stewart, wife of Robert Stewart of Baltimore MD, daughter of "late" Hugh
3.  Robert Morrison, blacksmith of New Castle
4.  Samuel Morrison, saddler of White Clay Creek Hundred
5.  Joseph Morrison, fuller of Mill Creek Hundred
6.  Martha Morrison
7.  William Morrison

So Hugh Morrison died probably early 1750.  I have in the index that he died in 1746, but I cannot find the source for that date.  He was most likely buried on the farm.
