DAVID & KATHERINE LEWIS
THE STORY AS I KNOW IT
David Lewis was born about 1660. He emigrated
from Wales to Pennsylvania probably about the same
time as his parents. At least it is possible that William
and Ann Lewis. were his parents. There were a
number of Danid Lewis' in Haverford at about the same
time. They are probably all related, and this
lineage seems to work.
William Lewis was in PA by 1686. They were from Illan, Glamorganshire, Wales. This is in southern Wales, just above Cardiff.
David married a woman named Katherine,
last name unknown. It is also unknown where they wed
but probably in Wales. They were Quakers.
As such, there was great persecution and encouraged a
large migration of Quakers to settle in haverford,
Pennsylvania.
David and Katherine Lewis had the following known
children. the names comes from the will of David Lewis
noted below:
1. Joseph Lewis
2. Susanna Lewis
3. Hannah Lewis
4. James Lewis
5. Sarah Lewis
Delaware County Notes by G. Smith stated that the
will of David Lewis was probated Jan 28, 1715. The
will mentioned his wife Katherine, as well as the
children listed above. The date of his will is also
given in the book Welsh Settlement of Pennsylvania by
Charles H. Browning.
What is confusing is that there was another David Lewis
who was buried 8th month, 9th day 1714. I believe
that would be about 3 months before the will was
probated. It could be the same David - or not. this
David was buried in the Merion meeting Grave yard.
from The Incompleted Burial Records of Merion (PA)
Meeting Grave-yard by Margaret B. Harvey, A.M.
Merion is just east of Haverford.
David & Katherine's daughter Susanna married John Maris of Springfield. She was said to be from Haverford. Both towns are in Delaware County Pennsylvania. The Maris family were also Quakers.
