SUSANNA LEWIS
THE STORY AS I KNOW IT
Susanna Lewis was born 7/4/1673. This may have been September of the old calendar. This birth date is found in Volume 16, page 116 of the National Society, Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America. She was born most likely in Delaware County Pennsylvania. Her father was David Lewis or Lewes and her mother was Katherine, last name unknown. The Lewis family was direct descendants of royalty, particularly Welsh royalty.
The History of the Lower Merion Friends Meetinghouse,
by Margaret B. Harvey notes that on 9,20,1693 Susanna
Lewis married John Maris in 1693 at
the Haverford Meeting house. It is also recorded in the Chester monthly meeting
volume 1, pages 7-45 Hinshaw files at the
Friends Historical Society at Swarthmore College in
Pennsylvania that John and Susannah Lewis
had the following children:
1. George born 1694 married Sarah Lewis,
daughter of Samuel Lewis.
2. Sarah
born 1/31/1696/7 married John Bennet.
3. Alice born 1699 died same day
4. Mary born 1701 married Joseph Taylor.
5. Hannah born 1701/2 married Michael Harlan.
6. Susannah born 1704/5
7. Jane born 1705
8. Katherine born 1707
9. John born 1709
10. James born 1711
11. Elizabeth born 1713
They were an active Quaker family in the Chester county
PA. The Chester Monthly Meeting 1701-3-25
reported that Susannah Maris had been appointed
overseer for the Springfield Meeting.
Susannah was mentioned in her father's will 1717,
the year her father David
Lewis died.
In 1747 she and John Maris moved into the Maris
family home "Home House" when John inherited it
from his father. However, John died within
the year. Most likely Susannah continued in
the house until her death. John's will was
proved April 18, 1748. Susannah was his main
beneficiary and his co executor.
It is not known when she died, but it was after April 18,
1748.
