MARY NICHOLS
THE STORY AS I KNOW IT
Mary Nichols was born about 1705 in New Castle Delaware. Her father was Thomas Nichols and her mother name was Mary Ludford.
Mary wed three times. Her first husband was Alphonsus Kirk. They married on the 14th day of the 3rd month, 1730 at Center Meeting House in Delaware. This was recorded in the Quaker Marriage Record Kennet monthly meeting 1730-3-14. He died in less than a years time on 1-1-1730/1 leaving Mary a young widow. He was just 25 years old, having been born 8-2-1705. The Cope History of Chester County, states that Alphonsus Kirk was the 8th child of Alphonsus Kirk, son of Roger, of Belfast Ireland and Abigail Sharpley, daughter of Adam & Mary Sharpley. The Kirk family settled at Centerville, Delaware.
Her second husband was Thomas Hayes. The Kennet Monthly meeting report 1734-9-2 they were to be wed which occurred on Nov 11, 1734 at the Kennett Monthly Meeting in Pennsylvania. It was indicated that Mary, widow was from New Castle. This is also recorded in a book Chester and Delaware Counties. It includes biographies of leading historical families. This information is found under the Hayes family in Volume 1.
Thomas was given by his father, Henry Hayes, a deed for 177 acres, 125 perches, in East Marlborough, Chester County, Pennsylvania on May 15, 1732. This is probably where Mary and Thomas lived during the married life. He died in the winter of 1738-9.
The children of Mary
and Thomas Hayes were:
1. Samuel born about 1735, he married Elizabeth Job.
2. Dinah, born about 1737.
Finally, in 1743 she married Jonathan Jackson. This
time reported in the New Garden monthly Meeting 1743-8-29
It is not currently known when or where Mary Jackson died.
