JOHN PASSMORE
THE STORY AS I KNOW IT
A note about the Quaker calendar. From the 12th century in England the year began with the vernal equinox, on March 25th. This lasted until January 1752 as the legal and civil year. However, from the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066 A.D. the first of January had been considered the historical beginning for the year. It was customary to use a system of double dating between Jan 1 and March 25, giving both years i.e. 11-8-1747/48. In Pennsylvania, where friends controlled the legislation for many years, the numerical form of dating was commonly used and sanctioned by law, i.e. eleventh month, 8th day, which would translate to Jan. 8, 1748 in the new calendar. Whenever dates were given with numbers we have left them as we found them.
John Passmore was born in Hurst, Berkshires
England. He was christened on Oct. 10, 1678."England Births and
Christenings, 1538-1975
His father was William Passmore.
It is believed his mother was Marjory Ball. John
married Mary Buxcey Nov. 3, 1701 in Hurst, Berkshires England
and immigrated to America about 1710. There are
hints that they joined the Kennet monthly meeting, but I
have not the documentation for that yet. From page 675
of History of Chester County by Futhey & Cope
the family settled in Kennet, now Pennsbury as early
as 1714.
Much of the information about this family is from the Passmore Family Book, found
at the Chester county Historical Society Library.
The known children of John and Mary Passmore
included:
1. William born 1703 wed Mary
Heald. He died 1744
2. John, christened Dec 7, 1704 wed Elizabeth
Harris, He died 1789
3. Humphrey, christened April
28, 1706, he died 1744
4, Richard, christened Feb. 22, 1706/07,
died May 1708
5. Eleanore, christened April 8, 1709, wed George
Carson, she died 1757
6. Thomas, possibly christened Aug.26, 1711
in Pennsylvania, died 1714
7. Augustine, born July 27, 1712, wed
Judith Farlon and 2nd Hannah Howard
8. George, born Feb. 23, 1718/19, wed Margaret
Strode died 1801
9. Mary, born
c 1720, wed William Pusey
10. Samuel born 1721, wed Susan
Butcher he died 1761
That is a long space between Augustine born 1712
and George born 1718. There is some question
about Mary's birth date. Some put it in
1714, I like 1720. It fits her childbirth
data.
Again re History of
Chester County the family moved to West
Marlborough some time after the 1714. and were
definitely there in 1746 when John Passmore died
at the age of 66. It is not know where he is
buried. He left a will, Chester County Will
Book 2, page 213 , Will #1010 in the Chester
County PA Archives.
The will was made July 14, 1743. and proved Dec. 16, 1746.
Mary Buxcey Passmore was still alive when he wrote
his will. The children not mentioned in the will were Humphrey,
Richard, Thomas. They had probably died
previously without issue. It is not known when Mary
Buxcey Passmore died. The Kennet Meetinghouse
was built in 1710. It is still there on Rt. 1 near the
intersection with rt. 52. They were part of that
community. The meetinghouse had its own cemetery and
it is my guest that they were both buried there.
