JACOB WALSH SR.
THE STORY AS I KNOW IT.
Jacob Walsh Sr. was born about 1750. We do
not know where but page 714 of The History of
Baltimore City and County by John Thomas Scarf referring
to his son, sates the son was born in Baltimore of
ancestors who settled in Pennsylvania in the early
times of that colony. At some point he moved, or his
parents moved to Baltimore. We do not know who his
parents were or who he married.
I found a painting listed in the Garth's Auction
Catalog for Nov. 2010. It was an oil painting by Rembrandt
Peale done about 1800. Within the catalog it
describes the young man as "Portrait of a well dressed
gentlemen in front of a window with a view to the
(Baltimore) harbor and ships, most flying the US
flag. On a table nearby is a paper that identifies
the setter as Jacob Walsh,
merchant from Baltimore. It gives his life line as
1772 - 1843, the son of Jacob Walsh Sr., also a
Baltimore merchant.
There is one possibility, Filby's Passenger and
Immigration List, notes from Pennsylvania German
Pioneers, Vol I, page 237, Jacob Walsh, no
age given arrived in Philadelphia from
Strassburger. However, I doubt that Jacob
Walsh is an unusual name.
By 1773 we believe our Jacob Walsh's family was
in Baltimore. Jacob Walsh was on the list of
Taxables in Baltimore town, West Hundred.
found years ago in the Maryland Historical Library, but I
don't have the source. I am so sorry. After
his name was 5 # of taxables. A taxable was a free
male over 16 years of age. So this may have been
his father??? and our Jacob Sr, was
really Jacob II and his son Jacob III.
- all speculation of course.
In 1774 Jacob Walsh was a Juror in a trail oct.
of that year.
The 1803 Baltimore Directory, page 133 has Jacob
Walsh Sr., merchant at 244 Baltimore St. and Jacob
Walsh Jr. - merchant at 100 Baltimore St.
More Baltimore Md Tax Records 1798-1808 note Jacob
Walsh Jr. on page 205,
then Jacob Walsh Jr. on
page 468
and Jacob Walsh Sr. on page 466
I believe Jacob Walsh Sr. was a successful
business man - given that there was a painting of his son
by Rembrandt Peale in 1800, noted above.
I don't know of his children besides, son Jacob,
nor his wife, nor when he died. I would think
that information is out there. Need another
trip to Baltimore.
