JOHN DENT II
Quite a bit is written about the Dent family in Charles County Gentry by Harry Wright Newman. It even includes the family coat of arms. Much of the Dent family information written on this website comes from this volume. It is supported with source documentation where that has been found.
John Dent II was born 1674 in Chaptico Hundred St. Mary’s County, Maryland. His parents were John Dent I and Mary Hatch.
John II married Catherine
possibly Catherine Turner probably in St. Mary’s
County about 1700. The only known children of John and
Catherine are sons. They were;
1. John Dent III born about
1710, married Mary Blackman and died
1791.
2. Hatch Dent born about 1712
3. Michael Dent born about 1714
4. Benjamin Dent born about 1716
In 1698 John Dent II sold land in Leonard Mills for the hospital site in that community. From History of St. Mary’s County by Hammett.
The Dent family had connections to Newport, in Charles County and Chaptico Hundred in St. Mary’s County. The two sites are near each other at the county line.
He owned a great deal of real estate. The Charles County Gentry lists the following pieces owned by John Dent II in 1720: " Cumberson " 200 acres, "Reading" 300 acres, "Evans’ Addition" 100 acres, and "Barnaby" 60 acres that had been granted to his father on July 29, 1674. The land lay west of Zachaiah Swamp near Newport. On March 13, 1720, 509 acres was added to the other holdings, it was all resurveyed and a new patent was issued in the name of Dent’s Inheritance containing 1169 acres "to be held of Calverton Manor".
John Dent II died intestate in 1732. His eldest son, John III was conveyed the plantation "Dent’s Inheritance. On March 10, 1732/3 "for the consideration of natural love" he gave to his brother Hatch Dent 144 acres. Charles County Deeds Book M, No 2, page 322. He also made other conveyances to his brothers, made some sales and kept 250 for his home.
The Charles County MD 1733 Tax List has John Dent (III) as 1 taxable individual in Newport West side Lower Port. That area also contains Katherine Dent with 2 taxable individuals. This is probably his widowed mother.
It is not known when Catherine died.
