RALPH MADDOCK
Return to Family Index
From the Encylopedia of American Quakers Vol
II "1638. John Maddocks son of Ralfe
Maddocks in Cheshire England
was born in or
about the year 1638. With this statement we connect John
Marddocks, an early immigrant to New Jersey
to a Ralfe Maddocks in Cheshire.
Julia Mortenson has gathered the following
information from The Over Parish Records are on FamilySearch.
Over is a
small village about 20 miles due east of Chester. believe
this is the Ralfe Maddocks noted above.
Ralph (Radulphus) Maddock was the son of
John (Johis) Maddock and an unknown wife. There are
baptismal. records in Over for the following
children of Johis:
1. George,
b. 5/19/1591 d. 4/23/1640 married Jana Holbrooke 1614
in Minshull, Cheshire. She died 11/1633 in
Over. 4
bapt. certs for their children: Margeria, Johannes, Radulphus
and Jana. George was mentioned in
Ralph's Will.
2.
Elena, b. 9/1595 d. 4//30/1682 married Radulphi
Ratcliffe, had son Radulphi Ratcliffe 9/21/1615. Her
husband
was born
in Weaverham.
3. Ralph
(Radulphi) b. 6/1596 d. 11/11/1637. Married Margery.
4. Johis,
d. 5/5/1602, probably as infant.
5. Johis,
d. 1/25/1608, probably as infant.
Ralph Maddocke married Margery,
last name unknown about 1615, probably in Over.
The children of Ralph and Margery Maddocke
were:
1. Elena born 1/28/1616,
2. Elizabeth (haven't found
baptismal. certificate for her yet but she is mentioned in the
Will),
3. Anna born 3/23/1621,
d. 6/10/1658, married George Sumner 8/24/1655 in Over,
4. Susan born 6/1/1629,
5. Maria born 4/27/1632,
6. John born 2/4/1638 he married Mrs.
Elizabeth Burnam 12/16/1669 in St. Sepulchre without
Newgate, London,
England.
He died March, 1700 in Salem, NJ.
Ralph Maddocke died Nov. 11, 1637. There is an
Inquisition listed in Chester Inquisitions, page 159
describing how
Margery was pregnant
with son John at the time of her husbands death and is
proper heir to his father's estate .Ralph
Maddocke was noted as yeoman of Over. His estate
consisting of over 14 acres of meadow, pasture, gardens, an
orchard, a mess
and a tentament.
from Julia Mortonson " The Inquisition
said that he got 100th of a Knight's share. I looked up Knight's
share. The King
would grant his knights
enough land that they could produce enough to live on and be
available to be called up for military
service at any time. This was called a Knight's share. The
amount of land varied depending on location. As time went
on, the kings realized they were giving up too much land so
they started giving out a fraction of a knight's share. This land
they got would
have been "of the King" which firmer form of "ownership"
than other kinds, which is the terminology
used in the
Inquisition." So we have Sir Ralph and Dame
Margery!
Ralph left a will. Cheshire Probate
Records, 1492-1940 In the Will, he mentions daughters
that I can read: Maria, Anna,
Ellin and Elizabeth. Another
daughter's name looks like England Maddock. Julia
has a copy of the Will. It is
handwritten in
Old English and Latin and very hard to read.
Margery Maddock died 1/11/1643, perhaps a victim of
the Sack of Over. "In 1643, Royalists
escaping from Nantwich
"sacked" Over. The situation during the English Civil War
was very dangerous to everyone.
As that was the
year Margery died.
Perhaps John was whisked to Nantwich which was held by
the Parliamentarians after his
mother was killed. There were many Maddocks
in Nantwich and many in the joiner trade. (Carpentry).
Nantwich was
about 12 miles due south of Over. We've long thought
that John went to London after the 1666
Great Fire of London to help
rebuild the city.
