JACOB (JACK) & CATHERINE MORELAND

Return to Family Index

Jacob Moreland was born about 1720 perhaps in Charles County, Maryland It is possible that his father was Patrick Moreland. His mother’s name is unknown.

Jacob married Catherine about 1746. Her last name is also unknown. She was born about 1725.

Information was received from Rob Moreland’s web site of Morelands from Maryland.   The original website connection is lost, but Rob has a will of WIlliam Moreland that is listed on the Rootsweb under Charles County Maryland.  I got there by a search.  I suggest trying that as addresses seem to change too often to keep current.    A trip to Charles County confirmed the early and active residence of the Moreland family.

Jacob Moreland patented 113 acres of Zechariah Manor on July 24, 1744 in Charles County. Jacob named the tract Jacob’s Birthright. It is quoted from Certificate of Resurvey of Escheat Lands for Jacob Moreland on Rob Moreland’s web site of Morelands from Maryland.

William Moreland made a will April 6, 1772 in Charles County, Maryland whereby he made his nephew, Walter Moreland, son of Jacob Moreland, his executor and sole heir. William left Walter all his lands, goods, and nineteen slaves. Paul Howell, Jonathan McDaniel and Thomas Jones witnessed the will. William had his will probated July 26, 1777 in Charles County, Maryland. Charles County Will Book AF: 35, Maryland State Archives, Annapolis, Maryland.

This same "uncle" William leased property in Zechariah Manor of Charles County where he is listed on the Rent Roll for Feb. 1768. Occupants of the property were shown to be William, age 50, Walter Moreland, age 20 and Jacob Moreland age 18. It is believe Walter and Jacob were brothers.

It is believed that Jacob and Catherine Moreland had at least two children:
1. Walter born 1748 wed Tabitha Dent and died in 1787.
2. Jacob born 1750 wed Celia, moved to York District of South Carolina and died there 1808.

Jacob Moreland appeared on the Charles County Tax List of 1758 as a resident in Trinity Parish, Upper Hundred of the county.

On December 12, 1767 Jacob sold his plantation to George Maxwell for £120. Catherine released her dower rights at that time. The deed was recorded March 9, 1768. It is not known where they went at this time, but it must be why the two sons were occupants of William’s property in February of that year.

Neither Jacob or Catherine Moreland was not on the 1790 Maryland Census in Charles County. Prince George’s County Census needs to be reviewed. This is where Walter’s widow was in 1790.
